Know your rights for same sex couples
If you are in a same sex relationship that ends, you may have the same legal rights and obligations as any de facto relationship.
The Family Law Act states that de facto relationships can exist regardless of whether that relationship is same sex or different sex, and can exist even when one of the parties is legally married to someone else.
This means if your relationship ends and you have shared assets, you have the same rights and obligations as any other de facto relationship.
If your same sex relationship has ended and you'd like to know more, please speak to our lawyers about any property or financial settlements or court orders you think may be necessary.
